Types of CETL Sessions

Each of these formats enables CETL presenters to connect with their audience in meaningful ways, whether through delivering knowledge, encouraging discussion, or offering hands-on learning. By choosing the session type that best fits their material and presentation style, presenters can create a rewarding experience for both themselves and their participants.

Lectures are a classic and effective way to deliver in-depth knowledge on specialized topics or recent research. In a lecture, presenters can dive deeply into complex ideas, offering attendees a structured learning experience. This format is ideal for topics that require substantial explanation, where presenters can walk participants through detailed insights and theories. Lectures often conclude with a Q&A segment, giving the audience a chance to reflect on the material and seek clarification or further exploration of key points.

A facilitated discussion provides a more collaborative learning environment, where participants are encouraged to share their perspectives and insights. In this format, a facilitator guides the conversation, helping attendees engage with the topic by posing thought-provoking questions and creating an inclusive space for diverse viewpoints. This approach is particularly effective for themes that benefit from open discussion, such as ethical issues, teaching challenges, or interdisciplinary subjects. Facilitated discussions are ideal for fostering critical thinking, allowing participants to both learn from one another and contribute actively to the conversation.

Workshops are designed to be interactive, focusing on equipping participants with practical skills or hands-on experience. Unlike other formats, workshops emphasize learning by doing, often incorporating activities, exercises, or group work that allow participants to immediately apply new skills. This format is perfect for topics that are skill-based, such as learning to use specific technology tools, exploring new teaching methods, developing assessment strategies, or working on curriculum planning. Workshops aim to leave participants with tangible skills or frameworks that they can implement directly in their practice.

For those looking to reach a broader audience, webinars offer a virtual presentation format, ideal for remote participants who wish to attend from different locations. This format closely resembles a lecture but offers the accessibility and flexibility of online learning. A typical webinar includes a structured presentation, often followed by a Q&A session, providing an opportunity for the audience to engage despite the remote setting. Webinars work well for sharing updates on emerging topics, offering remote training sessions, or presenting new CETL initiatives to a larger group.

Conversations provide a more informal setting, where attendees can engage in an organic dialogue around a central topic. Unlike structured formats, conversations are relaxed, promoting peer-to-peer exchange and a sense of community. These sessions are well-suited for topics that encourage participants to share their experiences, exchange ideas, and connect over shared interests or professional challenges. Conversations are often centered on professional growth, teaching stories, or brainstorming innovative ideas, allowing participants to explore these themes in an open, supportive environment.

A themed series offers the chance to explore a topic over multiple sessions, providing both depth and continuity. This format is beneficial for complex subjects that need more time for full exploration, such as teaching strategies, equity in education, or technology integration. Each session in a themed series builds upon the last, allowing participants to engage with material in a layered and evolving way. These series might involve weekly meetings that cover different aspects of a central theme, creating a cohesive learning journey that fosters sustained learning and mastery over time.
