Sponsored Scholarships

With the help of generous private donors, Mountwest Community & Technical College offers a variety of student scholarships based on academic achievement, community involvement, leadership, area of study and financial need.

The deadline to apply for Spring 2025 scholarships is November 3, 2024.

Unless otherwise noted, all scholarships require students to submit the application, a copy of their unofficial student transcript and one letter of recommendation by the deadline.  All transcripts and letters of recommendation should be submitted electronically using the appropriate forms, as specified within the scholarship application.

A Mountwest student with declared major in healthcare field.  Preference will be given to students who have met all prerequisites and have been formally accepted into the technical portion of their academic program. Students must be in good academic standing

Requirements:

  • Must be a graduating senior or alumni of Spring Valley High School (Wayne County, WV).
  • Have plans to attend Mountwest as a full-time student.
  • Be in good academic standing, with a minimum 2.50 GPA.
  • Filed a FREE Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Requirements:

  • Recipient must be pursuing an industrial education degree.
  • Preference will be given to children of coal miners.  Applicants should note this in the essay portion of their application.

Recipients must:

  • Be a new or current student at Mountwest Community & Technical College.
  • Show demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Be in good academic standing, with a 2.5 cumulative grade point average or higher.
  • Student must have young children at home.

This scholarship was established in 2013 by retired employee in honor of other recent retirees from the Robert C. Byrd Institute (RCBI), Dr. Robert B. Hayes and Mr. Everett Black. Hayes served as Marshall University President from 1974-1983 and interim president of then Marshall Community & Technical College. Black was the associate manager and machinist instructor for the Machinist Technology Program at RCBI.

Recipients must:

  • Be a second-year student at the Marshall Advanced Manufacturing Center (MAMC – formerly RCBI) for the upcoming semester.
  • Be enrolled in the CNC/ Machinist Technology Program at Mountwest Community & Technical College.

Additional Information
This is a one-time, non-renewable scholarship. Recipients will be selected based on math scores, grade point average, narrative, class attendance, instructor recommendation, and NIMS credential.

Requirements:

  • Be a student who is a cancer survivor or currently undergoing treatment, with breast cancer patients having priority. Students with chronic or debilitating condition(s) can be considered as well.  Medical documentation of condition must be provided from all applicants.
  • Be a dependent 26 years old or younger of a parent or guardian with cancer; or a survivor.
  • Be a student at Mountwest with at least one semester completed at the time of award.
  • Be in good academic standing with a 2/5 cumulative GPA or higher.
  • Show demonstrated financial need.

Requirements:

This scholarship provides for student expenses related to books and supplies.

  • A full time student of Mountwest Community & Technical College
  • Demonstrated financial need.

The scholarship program is designed to provide educational support for employees and immediate family members of Little Caesars owned by VDM Management Group/DLC Pizza, Inc. Immediate family is defined as a spouse, daughter, son, legally adopted individual, mother, or father.

Requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a degree or certificate program at Mountwest Community & Technical College, part-time or full-time.
  • Be an employee or an immediate family member of an employee of Little Caesars as specified above.
  • The qualifying employee at Little Caesar’s should be employed for a minimum of 6 months

The scholarship program is designed to increase diversity in the maritime industry by providing financial assistance to a minority student in the Maritime program – Deckhand Course. The funds in this scholarship are designed to be distributed to the student to ensure a meaningful impact on his/her experience at MCTC. The level of funding is a one-time benefit of $750.00.

Requirements:

  • Enrolled in and eligible to participate in the Deckhand Course provided through the Mountwest Maritime Academy.
  • Filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Show demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.
  • Eligible to work full-time in the US, on an indefinite basis.

Additional Information: Students can apply by visiting the scholarship application portal here. Students must meet all requirements to be eligible. Only 1 recipient will be selected to receive the scholarship. Limited funds are available.

Requirements:

This merit-based scholarship recognizes students for outstanding service and leadership in their school or community.  This scholarship is awarded to new and current students who have demonstrated strong leadership skills and a commitment to serving other.

Mountwest Leadership Scholarship recipients serve their community in many ways, from mentoring Head Start students and organizing youth groups to leading clean-up efforts and volunteering as interpreter.

  • A 2.5 or higher cumulative GPA on 4.0 scale.
  • Demonstrated participation in volunteer activities that improve the quality of life in your community.
  • Demonstrated leadership in school/community service activities, clubs, organizations or extra-curricular activities.
  • Submitted a Mountwest enrollment application
  • Filed a Free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Requirements:

  • First priority is given to a female student from Wyoming County, W.Va., preferably a student studying to become a paralegal.
  • Second priority is given to a female student from West Virginia, preferably a student studying to become a paralegal.
  • Third priority must be given to a West Virginia student at Mountwest Community & Technical College.

This scholarship is available to new and existing students who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance. Priority will be given to Phi Theta Kappa students.

  • A 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA average on 4.0 scale.
  • Submitted a Mountwest enrollment application
  • Filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The candidate must:

  • Be an undergraduate full- or part-time student seeking a Vet Tech certificate at Mountwest Community & Technical College.
  • Must be enrolled at Mountwest to receive the scholarship.
  • Spend 20 hours per semester doing community service at the Cook School building/ Animal Shelter during the semester in which the scholarship is awarded.
  • The scholarship committee may consider financial need and other criteria as needed to determine the best recipient of the award.
  • The expectation is the scholarship would not fund 100% of the tuition, books and fees of the program so the student would have some “skin in the game”. But the hope is that it would be a significant portion of the annual costs to allow more students in the program.
  • The scholarship would be able to continue for that students entire program as long as they maintain a 2.5 grade point average and stay in the Vet Tech program.

Scholarship awards will be for one academic semester. (However, prior recipients are eligible to apply for additional awards in subsequent years with a preference for past recipients.)

Consistent with the Scholarship’s Purpose, expenditures from the Fund shall be determined by the Foundation in consultation with appropriate administrative representatives or committees.

In the event a recipient, prior to receiving the scholarship funds, withdraws from the College or is no longer qualified under the criteria outlined in this Agreement, then the funds allocated for the scholarship may be granted to another qualified student.

Eligible applicants must be:

  • Children and/ or grandchildren of full –time employees of Service Pump & Supply Co., Inc.
  • A full-time student of Mountwest Community & Technical College.
  • In good academic standing with a 2.5 grade point average or higher

This scholarship was established in 2018 by the Mountwest Foundation Board of Director’s; Mountwest Institutional Board of Governors and by the family and friends of Susan (Sue) Kay Richardson. The scholarship was created in memory of Sue Richardson’s dedication and service as a past Board of Trustee member of Marshall University. Mountwest Community & Technical College Board of Governors and MCTC Foundation Board. The goal of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students who are enrolled in Mountwest Community & Technical College Culinary Arts Program.

Eligible applicants must be:

  •  Enrolled in MCTC Culinary Arts Program.
  •  A full-time student of Mountwest Community & Technical College.
  • Have a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average on 4.0 scale.
  • Filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Show demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.

The St. Mary’s School of Nursing / Mountwest Community and Technical College Minority Scholarship is to be awarded to a graduating high school student who meets the following criteria:

  1. Must be Black/African-American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander.
  2.  Must be a resident of one of the following West Virginia counties: Cabell, Lincoln, Mason, Putnam, or Wayne.
  3. Must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average in high school and must be graduating from high
    school in May/June of the application year

Additional requirements:
Must complete and submit the following:

  • Completed scholarship application
  • High school transcript or a letter printed on school letterhead verifying a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
  • An 800-word typed essay answering the question, “How has being a minority/person of color molded you as a person and how will that shape your career as a registered nurse?

The recipient of this scholarship will receive the following:

  • Waived tuition at Mountwest CTC for support courses required for St. Mary’s School of Nursing
    (Approximately $5,000).
  • Full tuition, fees, and books for all courses at St. Mary’s School of Nursing upon completion of prerequisite and corequisite courses at Mountwest CTC (Approximately $19,000.00)

 

Student must remain continuously enrolled and maintain an overall 2.5 GPA for ongoing eligibility

This scholarship program provides opportunities for students to enroll and graduate from applied technology programs.  The purpose of this program is to support students pursuing certifications and degrees in high-demand, high-wage career fields.

Requirements:

  • A 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Be currently enrolled or submitted a Mountwest enrollment application.
  • Filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Have declared major in the following certificate or degree programs:
    • Business or technical field

Recipient must be:

  • Be enrolled as a full -time student of Mountwest Community & Technical College in a certificate, an associate degree (two-year), or dual-degree program.
  • Be deaf.

Additional Information: The award will be given to a Deaf student who may be currently enrolled or newly admitted. Scholarship is renewable if 2.0 grade point average is maintained.

Requirements:

  • Full time student of Mountwest Community & Technical College.
  • Enrolled in an associate degree program
  • Resident of Cabell or McDowell counties, W.Va.
  • African-American

Eligible applicants must have/be:

  • A current or previous WV resident.
  • A student that is enrolled in the Mountwest Veterinary Technical Program.
  • Completed at least 1-year of study at Mountwest Community & Technical college in good standing.
  • Filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Show demonstrated financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.

Tuition Waivers

Mountwest offers scholarships/tuition waivers for the following students:

  • Members of the National Guard (receive resident tuition rates)
  • Employee, employee’s spouse and/or employee’s dependent children
  • Children and spouses of law enforcement, firefighter, National Guard, Reserve or Active Duty military personnel killed in the line of duty
  • West Virginia residents at least 65 years old
  • High school graduates in foster care

A limited number of metro tuition waivers are available to incoming freshmen from Gallia and Lawrence County high schools in Ohio. Students must apply through their high school counselors.
