Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) Medical Assisting (Duration: One Year)

Become a Medical Assistant with our one-year certificate program and gain the skills needed to thrive in the fast-growing healthcare field! Medical assistants play a vital role in patient care, handling both administrative tasks like scheduling, medical records, and billing, as well as clinical duties such as taking vital signs, assisting with exams, and preparing medications. This certification will allow graduates to our students take the CCMA exam (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant from the National Health Career Association (NHA) work in a medical office, medical laboratory, hospital, outpatient clinics, and other healthcare facilities. Participants who pass the CCMA exam will be able to apply for exams for certifications for the following fields: Phlebotomy (Certified Phlebotomy Technician), EKG (Certified EKG Technician), and medical secretary (Certified Medical Administrative Assistant). Students will earn Mountwest Community and Technical College credit for the courses completed, making it easy to continue your education on the main Huntington campus for a 2-year AAS degree.

WORKFORCE/NON-CREDIT TRAINING

Patient Care Technician (PCT) with EKG and Phlebotomy Certificate Program (11 weeks)

Kickstart your healthcare career with our Patient Care Technician (PCT) Certificate Program in Mason County! This comprehensive program provides hands-on training in basic nursing skills, phlebotomy, and EKG monitoring, equipping you with the expertise to assist patients and support medical teams. You’ll learn essential skills such as bathing, bed making, assisting with daily activities, recording vital signs, performing venipunctures, conducting EKGs, and following critical infection control procedures.

Commercial Truck Driving CDL A (Duration: 6 Weeks)

Our Commercial Truck Driving (CDL-A) Training Program provides the knowledge and hands-on experience you need to start a rewarding career in the trucking industry. This comprehensive program includes classroom instruction covering safety regulations, vehicle maintenance, trip planning, and industry best practices, along with behind-the-wheel training where you’ll gain real-world driving experience under the guidance of an experienced instructor. Whether you’re new to trucking or looking to upgrade your skills, this program will prepare you to pass the CDL-A exam and hit the road with confidence. Hazmat endorsement training is also available for those looking to expand their CDL-A qualifications and job opportunities.

SMAW or GTAW Welding (Duration: 11 Weeks)

Get the skills you need for a high-demand career in welding with our comprehensive training program! Students can choose to specialize in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard equipment and techniques. Our expert instructors provide practical training, safety protocols, and blueprint reading to prepare you for real-world welding jobs.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Every class looks a bit different, depending on the instructor. But, in general, your instruction will be a mix of classroom and hands-on instruction, with an emphasis on practical application. Some of our programs use a computer-based learning management (LMS) platform called Blackboard to compete assignments, but many of these assignments are completed in-class. Our instructors are professionals in their respective fields which allow them to tailor the instruction to meet the current demands of employers.

For-Credit Courses: These courses count toward a degree or certificate program and can be transferred to other accredited institutions. These courses contain graded assignments, exams, and specific academic requirements.

Workforce Training: These courses are designed for professional development, skill enhancement, or personal enrichment. They do not count toward a degree but can lead to industry certifications, workforce training, or continuing education credits (CEUs).

All prospective students must have their high school diploma or equivalent prior to the start of classes.

Some programs require students to successfully pass a drug screening and background check.

Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) Medical Assisting ONLY:

The following additional documents are required:

  1. A sign-off by a physician following a physical examination certifying that the applicant is capable of performing all medical assistant duties and is free of any contagious or communicable diseases or disorders.
  2. Externship Requirements Check Off – Proof of required vaccinations and CPR Card

CDL A, Welding, and PCT Workforce Training: Sign up for the training program using our online platform, Genius located at  https://mctc.geniussis.com/catalog.

Student financial assistance is available for those who qualify. All prospective students should complete the 2025-26 Federal Application for Student Financial Assistance application located at https://studentaid.gov.  The Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) in Medical Assisting is a for-credit program, meaning that eligible students may receive federal Pell grants and student loans through the Direct Loan program. If you’ve been a WV resident for at least 12 months, you can apply for Workforce HEAPS funding.  For more information and/or to apply for WV HEAPS funding, visit Apply Now – HEAPS Workforce – CFWV.com.

Please note that WV HEAPS applicants are required to have a FAFSA on file before a funding determination can be made.

Students are responsible for their tuition costs. After financial assistance is awarded, if there is an outstanding balance, the balance must be paid. If you are currently employed, some employers will sponsor their employees to continue their training. Please ask your employer if this is an option and also encourage them to visit our Workforce Employer Relations page at <need link>. If your employer does not offer sponsorship, a payment plan may be available for those who qualify. A down payment for the payment plan may be required. Proof of program completion will not be released until all balances are paid in full.
